Introduction to Marquetry

This two-day class will begin with a demonstration of the double bevel method for cutting marquetry.

Participants will then have the opportunity to cut a simple motif using both hand saws and a power scroll saw.

Student Tools

Students should bring with them an 11” fret saw. Here’s one from Woodcraft: fret saw.

Silas has a degree in architecture from Princeton. He later was an apprentice to Wendell Castle and studied marquetry at the École Boulle in Paris. Silas received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship. He has also been named a Renwick Alliance Master of the Medium. Silas’s work can be found in the following museums: Museum of Fine Arts - Boston Philadelphia Museum of Art Brooklyn Museum of Art Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Mint Museum - Charlotte, NC Milwaukee Museum of Art
