Woodworking Fundamentals for Furniture Makers

Beginner

In this course, we will provide the complete foundation you need to make solid wood furniture. Over the course of a week, each student will take rough sawn lumber and turn it into their own finished table. Throughout the class, we will deep dive in to wood and furniture. We will cover wood science, building to accommodate for wood movement, furniture design, milling to maximize material, joinery, detail work, and finishing. We will use a combination of stationary machines, handheld power tools, and hand tools so students can learn how to complete each step of the process with the tooling they have access to when they return home. It’s a jam-packed week!

The project will be constructed with mortise and tenon joinery with carefully book-matched and grain-matched components. Students will be able to add their own design elements so the piece to make it unique. With the aid of routers, jigs, and hand tools, we will problem solve our way through each student’s design idea(s) for a fun, tailored experience.

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced woodworker, students will leave this class with a robust new skillset. For beginners, the course will provide a solid foundation in safety, process, and furniture construction that you can apply to any future projects. For more advanced students, the class will provide confidence, a renewed understanding of wood as a material, and insight into efficiency using the jigs and tricks of a professional furniture maker.

Larissa is a woodworker and teacher who makes custom furniture and other functional wooden objects in Philadelphia. When she is not designing and building custom furniture in her own workshop, she’s on the road teaching and making at shops and schools around the country. In 2021, she was as an artist-in-residence at Arrowmont School of Art & Crafts and in 2022, she completed a fellowship at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. You can find articles she has authored in Fine Woodworking and Woodcraft Magazine and her work has been on display in exhibitions at the Messler Gallery and Wayne Art Center. Even her days out of the shop are wrapped up in artful woodworking, as she works part-time at the Wharton Esherick Museum. https://www.instagram.com/larissa.huff/
