Make a Set of Shaker Boxes

Beginner

Craft your own heirloom-quality Shaker boxes in this immersive two-part class! We will make a complete set of five oval Shaker Boxes (#0 through #4) using traditional methods and materials. The bands and tops will be cherry and the bottoms pine. Students will go through the complete process of building the boxes. In the first session we will prepare the bands and carve the Swallowtails. After soaking, the bands will be bent, tacked and set aside to dry.

Class size limited to 10.

Bill has always enjoyed working with wood—whether building the ultimate childhood fort or crafting a finely made piece of furniture. A few years ago, he set out to deepen his skills with hand tools. A newspaper article about Shaker Oval Boxes piqued his interest and led him to connect with a box maker from New Hampshire. That conversation inspired him to take a class with John Wilson, often called the “Johnny Appleseed” of Shaker Oval Boxes.
