Project Design: Accessory Tables
Intermediate
This single-session 4hr workshop is oriented towards hand-tool woodworkers, looking to design and plan their next project. This session will focus on apartment-sized accessory tables, including side tables, coffee tables, nightstands, etc... For the more advanced or ambitious, this project can also incorporate a drawer component. The class will meet in-person in Brooklyn.
For a new hand-tool woodworker, and especially for those of us working and living in small spaces, it's easy to lose momentum when trying to plan your next project. Often the projects available on the internet are either too complex, too machine dependent, and the final piece too bulky to live with in what might already be tight quarters. In many cases, all planning and design has been done, but without taking into account the limitations, challenges and struggles that we face as hand-tool woodworkers in NYC. This workshop is meant to answer that need.
In our session, we'll start by exploring the dynamics we need to consider when designing a particular category of furniture. What are the structural forces at play? How can we address those issues with joinery? How do we take into account our own individual toolset and skills, both real and desired, to bring into being a piece of furniture that is all our own design, something we'll love to live with and can use everyday.
In this class, we'll be setting down our chisels and picking up pencils to draft a measured drawing and parts list for a beautiful, achievable, and executable design with a plan for success.
This course does require knowledge and experience with basic hand-tool woodworking fundamentals, similar to those learned in the "Build Your Toolbox" course. If you are unsure you meet the requirements, please reach out to classes@makegoodwood.com for guidance before registering.
After the class, if more direct instruction and support is needed, participants can follow-up for further design and planning consultation sessions, one-on-one private joinery instruction, and/or milling services, if needed.
Cost does includes materials used during class. Additional sessions and services needed following the class will be billed separately.
