8 Week Advanced Beginner Handbuilding: 4 MORE Special Projects

Intermediate

With Sara Hensel

Previous HB experience Recommended

Welcome to Four MORE Special Projects for continuing handbuilders! Perfect for folks with at least 8 weeks of experience, this course aims to build on your existing skills, expose you to fresh techniques, strengthen your attention to detail, and enrich the conceptual grounding of your handbuilt functional objects by exploring four specific objects.

A lamp base, a divided tray, a flower brick, and a woven basket. First, we will start out ambitious with a historically-inspired lamp base project. We’ll learn to work from a profile template to coil an intentional, symmetrical form, and incorporate design considerations for the lamp’s hardware. From there, we will flow on to a divided tray project, working with coils and stiff slab to make a large, segmented piece. From there, we will collaborate with our inner florist to create a flower brick. Finally, we will wrap up with an ambitious, open coil-work woven piece using a hump mold of our own construction.

These assignments are designed to encourage you to play, fail, stretch your comfort zone, and import ideas, interests, and skills from other contexts.

Each week will consist of instructor demos and personal making time. Students will also have full access to the studio during open hours for the duration of their 8 Week course (6am-2am All Days).

I earned a BFA in ceramics from University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2018, where summer opportunities to teach ceramics to youths nurtured an ethic of playful earnestness in my work. Now, as a full time potter and ceramics instructor for adults, I believe a clay practice offers a powerful opportunity to not only develop a technical toolkit, but to also explore our philosophy and intention around making. In my teaching, I emphasize the potency of clay as a medium as well as the ways in which form and surface dovetail to elevate a user's experience of the objects we create. I strive to imbue my work and my introduction with humor, curiosity, and observation, and hope to convey the harvest around and within. Nerd out with me about pottery, vegetable gardening, making music, cooking, D&D, bouldering, and dogs!
