Damascus Making 101 - Two Day

Beginner

Whether you're a die-hard fan of Forged in Fire or just looking to take your crafting skills to the next level, our weekend-long Damascus-making workshop is the perfect opportunity to unleash your creativity and learn the art of creating stunning Pattern-Welded steel.

No prior experience is necessary, as our expert instructors will walk you through the entire process, step by step. In this immersive class, you'll have the chance to learn the unique "Dry Forge Welding" technique developed by the renowned experts Steve Rollert and Owen Wood. You'll start by gaining a deeper understanding of different welding techniques and exploring the common types of steel used in Damascus steel production.

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into the hands-on experience of stacking and welding a "Dry" billet, beginning with 20 layers and measuring 1.5x4". With the option to restack billets for higher layer counts, and time permitting, you can even forge a blade or hardware from the steel you create.

By the end of the workshop, you can expect to leave with several pounds of high-quality Damascus steel, ready to be transformed into countless future projects. The possibilities are endless, and this material can also be utilized in future bladesmithing classes here at Forge with Intention!

We break for lunch around noon for 30 - 45 minutes. There are plenty of places to go nearby or you can store and prep your sack lunch in our kitchenette.

There is an additional $30 materials fee per billet for this class; students will be able to make several billets if they choose. Some scholarships to cover this are available. Ask Steve for more info 303-916-6275

Steve Rollert has been making knives for over 40 years, starting with a Burr King grinder in the spare bedroom of a duplex in Denver, Colorado in 1980. Steve's interest in knifemaking started while attending Skunk Hollow Blacksmithing School. After graduation Steve sought out Japanese Swordsmith, Kuzan Oda, then in Colorado Springs. Kuzan taught Steve the Japanese mindset and disciplines of knifemaking necessary to produce knives of enduring quality and value.

Steve has progressed to producing Damascus Steel and hand forging fine blades in his large shop in Keenesburg, CO. He is well known for his quality pattern welded Damascus and his earlier work in cable welded Damascus.

Along with making custom knives, Steve has also been an avid Martial Artist since his late teens, studying a variety of disciplines, focusing heavily on martial blade techniques. He applies his martial experience in designing knives with the practitioner in mind.

In 1999 Steve started Keen Edge Knives in response to a number of requests for high quality training knives from his fellow martial artists. Over the years Steve has strived to provide the best quality product possible at a reasonable price.

Steve is an innovator, an artist, a dedicated husband and father. Above all else Steve is a dedicated follower of Christ, holding his faith as the guiding light in his life.
